Ana Pérez Ventura (Santiago de Compostela 1981), visual artist and pianist. Graduated in Fine Arts at the University of Vigo, Spain, Higher Degree in Music at the Conservatory of Vigo, Master in Music and Plastic Arts at the University of La Sorbonne in Paris, currently piano teacher at the conservatory Grand Paris Sud, presents her second exhibition at the METRO Gallery in Santiago de Compostela.

When we talk about the plastic work of Ana Pérez Ventura we usually use terms from the musical vocabulary. Thus, Tourner la page (turning the page), the title of this exhibition, refers to the action of turning the pages of the scores during the performance. The Études are based on the repetition of gestures in musical practice; the Notages and the Neumas, and now also the Reliefs, recreate the melodic pattern formed by the notes of well-known scores. Thanks to this interrelation and the different creative processes that come into play, the immaterial time of music becomes visible in the material space of the different artistic supports.

Since his first exhibition in this space in 2019, there has been a clear evolution that is reflected in the use of new materials and techniques and in the chromatic transformation of his paintings, going from the uniformity of those blue Études to the vibrant polychromy of the current ones. These Études, of which he has produced more than 270 works, based on the calibrated and almost obsessive repetition of circular gestures, superimposed in multiple layers and executed in different colours, are the physical testimony of the time spent learning or performing music.

In this exhibition we can see unpublished pieces from two series on which he has been working for years, in which he uses two opposing processes: on the one hand, the addition of paint in the multiple layers of the Études, and, on the other, the subtraction based on the perforations of the wood in the Notages. If in the Études the evolution has been towards a chromatic expansion, in his latest Notages there has been a reduction of elements with respect to the previous ones, moving from the perforation on wallpaper pasted on the wood to working directly on the bare wood, from the silence and emptiness created by the hollows.

This exhibition also includes his first work in volume from this series, Tourner la page. It is a work inspired by the "accordions" of sheet music that pianists build in order to place all the pages spread out on the music stand and thus avoid having to pass them while playing. Also included in the same series are eighteen pieces created from Carl Czerny´s first book of studies for piano Op.299, which recreate the melodic pattern of the score by perforating the place occupied by the different notes on the staff.

Ana Pérez Ventura´s career is marked by a path in which the confluence of art and music gives her work a genuine and recognisable identity. Her works have been exhibited in prominent private and institutional spaces and she is present in important art collections, among others in the Centro Galego de Arte Contemporánea.
